DI News History - November 15, 2018

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The November 13, 2003 issue of The Daniel Island News focused on local schools. Headlines in the issue included “Daniel Island Academy to Offer Top Quality Child Care,” “Bishop England Offers Students a Christian-Based Education,” and “Opting to Home School: Two Residents’ Stories.”

There was also an article about the possibility of a new Berkeley County school being built on Daniel Island. Then Governor Mark Sanford signed neighborhood schools legislation with the intent to pull schools back into the centers of their communities. That concept had been the vision for Daniel Island since development. The vision became grounded with the Berkeley County Board of Education’s approval of a kindergarten through eighth-grade school (now known as Daniel Island School) to be built on Daniel Island Drive.

TEN YEARS AGO

A hot topic in the November 13, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News was the nation’s economic recession. An article offered some suggestions to help residents struggling with the downturn, including utilizing coupons, possibly having dual incomes in the family, and even eating out less.

Also in the news were the results from the recent election. Included in the vote tallies were the percentages of Daniel Islanders turning out to cast their ballots. Out of 5099 register voters, only 63.27 percent voted.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The big story in the November 14, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News stated that the request by Daniel Island citizens to officially begin the exploration process of a possible annexation into Charleston County was in the hands of then South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. Attorneys representing the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association (DINA) and the Daniel Island Property Owners Association (DIPOA) hand-delivered a petition with approximately 700 verified signatures to the Berkeley County Clerk of Court (the exploration process was later terminated due in part to high expenses associated with studying the county change and what some called “antiquated annexation laws”).

In other island news, an article spotlighted the “Daniel Island Knitters,” a stitching group that completed seven afghans to be donated that December to The Victory House for Veterans in Walterboro.

In business news, what was billed as a “soft” open turned out to be an unexpectedly packed house on Tuesday, November 6, 2013 for the new Daniel Island restaurant Agave’s Mexican Cantina.
