FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the November 20, 2003 issue of The Daniel Island News, it was announced that for the second consecutive year U.S. Soccer named Blackbaud Stadium (now named the MUSC Health Stadium) as a finalist in its annual “Best Of” awards.

The stadium was one of six venues nominated as one of the best soccer stadiums in the United States that year.

Also in the news, the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association hosted a town meeting with several state and local representatives, including Representatives Shirley Hinson, Jim Merrill and C. David Umphlett, and Senators Larry Grooms, John Kuhn and Arthur Ravenel. Budget cuts were a hot topic, one which led to the subject of education. Rep. Hinson spoke about a 16 percent cut to state agencies, and that there had been no cuts to education thus far. “However, next year the only way to reduce will be to cut education. We held it off, but there is no way around it,” she said.

The front cover of the November 20, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News spotlighted one way the Daniel Island community came together at the Church of the Holy Cross’s annual Thanksgiving blessing service during the economic struggles of 2008.

“Truly we have been blessed in this place,” said former Pastor Don Flowers of Providence Baptist Church, who offered the welcome and invocation at the 12th Annual Inter-Faith Blessing and Service on Daniel Island.

In non-profit news, an article featured the 2nd Annual Ladies Appreciation Luncheon and Fashion Show. All guests were asked to bring a suit, blouse, skirt, dress or accessory item to donate to Charleston County’s Dress for Success, an organization that promotes the independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools.

A feature article in the November 21, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News spotlighted volunteers, a mix of church members from Providence Baptist Church and community residents, who packaged meals in less than two hours for the Stop Hunger Now international hunger relief agency. The assembly process combined rice, beans, vegetables and a flavoring mix, providing essential vitamins and minerals into each small meal package.

Also in the news that October, the City of Charleston joined several municipalities in the Lowcountry, including Mt. Pleasant, in passing an ordinance making it illegal to text and drive. During the initial implementation of the law, officials publicized the new law and issued warnings to drivers.
