FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Nov. 3, 2005, edition, the cover and centerfold featured “The Great Escape,” the relocation of the Breaux family from New Orleans to Daniel Island after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Louisiana city.

In other top news, Carolyn Morris was named principal of the soon-to-open Daniel Island School; a five-star Carnegie Hotel went through city review and was planned for the area where Simmons Park Apartments sit today.

In other news, we reported that mosquitoes remain active until the first killing frost, therefore South Carolinians are urged to reduce the risk of getting mosquito-borne diseases by wearing long sleeves and long pants when outdoors, using a repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus following label directions, looking around homes and property several times a week to empty standing water keeping gutters clear of leaves and debris to reduce water collecting to form a breeding place for mosquitoes.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Nov. 4, 2010, edition, the top news story was the groundbreaking of Governors Park. As a crowd of more than 50 people looked on, 12 shovels plunged into the dirt in the large grassy field beside the Family Circle Tennis Center to commemorate the start of what has become Daniel Island’s largest recreation area.

The centerfold featured the first Daniel Island News Park Day Pie Baking contest, together with photos and great pie recipes. Thirty-two readers entered pies. The winners were: First place – Samantha Disinger (Lemon Meringue); Second place – Becky Kasten (Apple); Third place – Catherine Allen (Pumpkin).

In island life photos, there was a collage of Halloween pictures.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The cover and centerspread of the Nov. 5, 2015, edition was the first article in a series of Veterans Day commemoratives highlighting “bios of the banner brave” on Daniel Island.  There was also information about the Veterans Day parade in downtown Charleston.

In other news, Orlando’s Pizza expanded into the suite next door, doubling its size. The expansion added dining and kitchen space, a new bar, and a rear patio.  The restaurant first opened its doors in September 2004.
