TEN YEARS AGO – All about Breast Cancer Awareness

The October 16, 2008 issue of The Daniel Island News was filled with information about breast cancer awareness.

In one particular article, Caroline Sullivan, a Daniel Island resident at the time, was ready to go another round in her battle against breast cancer. After forming Fight Like A Girl, LLC, in 2007, to raise awareness about prevention and early detection of the disease, she launched a new website to take her campaign to the next level.

“We’re fighting to build a high visibility nationwide community of support and to cure breast cancer,” said Sullivan of the new online endeavor. “I would love for our website to raise such awareness that young women are getting educated and getting mammograms earlier, ultimately catching the disease earlier.”

Another article listed recommendations for women about MRI/mammogram testing from The Cancer Society, which include:

• A lifetime risk of 20 percent or greater (based on standard risk assessment tools).

• A first-degree relative (mother, father, sister, brother, child) with breast cancer before menopause.

• A positive for BRCA gene mutation.

• Prior radiation therapy to the chest for lymphoma treatment (between ages 10-30).

• A personal history of breast cancer.

• Extremely dense breast tissue.

• High-risk lesions on a previous biopsy.

FIVE YEARS AGO - Brains, Bodies, and Behaviors program presented by the Daniel Island School PTA

An article in the October 17, 2013 issue of The Daniel Island News featured a program presented to parents by the Daniel Island School PTA. Nearly 50 moms (and a few dads) attended the program, entitled “Brain, Bodies, and Behaviors.” Local pediatrician, Dr. Trish Hutchinson, co-founder of Charleston’s Girlology/Guyology, came prepared with a presentation designed to educate parents on healthy ways to talk to their adolescent sons and daughters about their emerging sexuality.

A main topic among the parents who attended was social media and what affect it has on teenagers.

Even five years ago, Hutchinson agreed that social media and the Internet were as accessible as ever and without proper training, teenagers can be put into dangerous situations.

“Giving your child a smart phone without instructions is like giving your teen car keys without driving instruction. The digital age is upon us and inescapable so you need to understand it also. Help your kids to learn how to navigate through the digital world, which includes Internet, social media, online games, chatrooms, and more. Don’t let your child experience these without supervision and some straight talk, because most of it isn’t safe.”
