October 19, 2006:
The top news story was that the Audubon Society’s dream to build a nature center on Daniel Island was deemed not likely to happen by Mike Dawson, director of the society’s Beidler Forest Center in Harleyville at the time. He said they were looking to develop a center on the old Navy base.
The cover and centerfold featured breast cancer awareness and the personal survival story of Cindy Kimbrell, wife of then Publix manager Mike Kimbrell.
In the “What I Do” segment, Charleston Team 10 Patrol Officer Heather Gardner, who graduated at the top of her class at the police academy, was featured. Gardner was trained to handle hazardous materials found in drug labs and chemical spills and was a bagpiper and drummer for the City of Charleston Police Pipe Band.
October 20, 2011:
The cover and centerfold previewed Park Day, which also coincided that year with the Zac Brown Band playing at Blackbaud Stadium.
It was reported that 24 cases of credit card fraud reported in the spring on Daniel Island were traced to a point of compromise on Daniel Island by the Charleston office of the U.S. Secret Service.
Also in the news, more than 15 emergency vehicles from the City of Charleston, Berkeley County and North Charleston responded to a gas leak at Dublin Down (the current location of Blondies Bagels & Cafe).
October 20, 2016:
The cover and centerfold featured the “Change for Haiti” initiative, where co-founders Amy Dietrich and Carina Buckman set up one of 20 official donation jugs to be located at participating businesses, schools, churches and special event locations across Daniel Island.
In other news, site work was officially underway on phase one of Blackbaud’s innovative new global headquarters, located on the corner of Fairchild and Central Island streets on the edge of the island’s town center area.
Winners from the Race for the Cure were published, plus a collage highlighting the event.
