DI News History - October 3, 2019

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 30, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold features revolved around the local music scene, including events at the Family Circle Tennis Stadium (now known as Volvo Car Stadium) and local bars, as well as performances by local bands, island steel drum player of Island Trio Tim Mathias, and island opera singer Benjamin Lee.

In news and events, it was reported that islanders and others were working to keep power lines buried as SCE&G (now Dominion Energy) worked to connect power sources from Daniel Island to Mt. Pleasant.

The first Buddy Walk on Daniel Island was held that year and the paper featured the Vail family in a piece titled “Raising Claire - Amazing, Terrific and Unbelievable.”

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Oct. 1, 2009 edition of the paper, the centerfold featured a review of soups from island restaurants by island residents and employees. Soup reviewers included David Vail, Donna Patterson, Amber Kelley, Summar Phillips, Caroline Smith, Crystal Kowalis, Benjamin Detar, Jan Marvin and Betsy Sandness.

Cover stories included an update on the skateboard and bike laws for the City of Charleston, with some sidewalk use expected to be approved; and Berkeley County’s quinquennial property reassessment (held every five years) resulted in far fewer appeals than anticipated.

In school news, local advocates for the Palmetto Scholars Academy lobbied lawmakers for building space and photos from Bishop England’s “John England Day” were featured.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the Oct. 2, 2014 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold featured results from the paper’s “Adorable Pets Contest.” Winning photos were published in a collage.

In other news, there was an article about Reading Partners, a non-profit organization based out of California that provides reading volunteers to low-income schools. At the time, the group was working to improve local reading statistics.

Results from a Daniel Island News survey were reported about Facebook groups and whether they provided forums for productive discussion or dangerous gossip. The survey results showed that there is a true love/hate relationship with social media. On one hand, it offers a tremendous – and fairly instant – volume of “intelligence” with respect to community-relevant events, issues, and support. On the other hand, it contains comments and advice that are often unsolicited or taken out of context.
