TEN YEARS AGO

In the October 29, 2009, edition of the paper, the centerfold featured all things Halloween – a survey asking readers’ favorite candy revealed that chocolate was an overwhelming favorite. The centerfold also featured photos from the Pumpkin Walk and Drum Circle, which was then the sixth annual celebration of the event. There were also safety tips from the police as well as an effort by island high school students, Maddy and Cody Orick, to distribute UNICEF boxes to trick or treaters.

In top news, it was reported that the South Carolina Ports Authority was seeking an experienced listing agency with “a South Carolina presence to assist in the marketing” of their Daniel Island property, located on the island’s western side along the Cooper River. Previous efforts by the Daniel Island POA in 2008 to purchase the property from the state ports authority for $25 million were rejected. The other cover story included a feature about Wyldlife, a group for middle school students.

In other news, a 25-year-old Daniel Island resident was arrested in connection with multiple car break-ins on the island, according to Lt. Christine Middleton, former commander of Daniel Island-based Team 5, who urged residents to heed police warnings to lock cars and homes.

FIVE YEARS AGO

The cover and centerspread of the October 30, 2014, edition of the paper featured information about the upcoming Park Day event, which was to be held the following Saturday. The popular island event is now defunct.

In development news, Central Island Square apartments (originally called the Daniel Island Apartments), received preliminary approval by the City of Charleston Design Review Board. The mixed-use multi-family project with 30,000 square feet of retail space opened last year and takes up a whole city block.

Also in the news, island resident Jim Chalupsky was starting up a new Daniel Island Flying Club. Since there is no airport on Daniel Island, Chalupsky hoped to have the club focus more on the social aspect of flying — giving members who share a passion for the hobby a way to connect and “talk shop.”
