DI News History - September 19, 2019

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 16, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold features revolved around island wildlife, highlighting the oyster and clam food sources. Stories also featured an explanation of the sharks that live in the Wando River and the recent publication of “Sharks of South Carolina,” as well as an “Urban Bambi Story,” explaining herd management techniques in developing towns like Daniel Island and Hilton Head.

In business news, it was reported that L’Paradise Salon & Day Spa celebrated their second anniversary on the island (located where Haven Hair & Skin Salon is now). Also, Japan Karate Institute opened next to Qwik Pak & Ship on Seven Farms Drive.

The Island Life photo page featured photos of the very first swim team year-end party, residents working out at The Field House (which housed O2 Fitness until recently when they moved to Island Park Dr.), and Daniel Island News delivery boy John Karle picking up his papers in his wagon.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 17, 2009 edition of the paper, the centerfold featured an article by island resident Mary Sudzina titled “Skype’s the limit: Skyping for pleasure and business,” and offered tips on how and when to use what was then a new technology.

The cover story spotlighted cohabitating with alligators, as we reported on a confrontation between a gator and a husky in a pond in the Smythe Park neighborhood.

In sports news, the Nationwide Tour Championship was featured and those who worked together to bring the important golf event to Daniel Island, including Kevin Canning and Denis Gallagher. Also, the Get Fit Challenge continued, with Amy Daniel taking the lead in percentage of weight lost.

In Island Life, photos from the Red Balloon Yard Sale were featured.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In an article in the Sept. 18, 2014 edition of the paper, it was reported that the response had been “overwhelming” for the new DI Commemorative Park. The park was planned in hopes of serving as a reflective space to honor or memorialize loved ones, friends, and others.

The cover and centerfold article featured Frank Abagnale, Jr., who is the subject of the book, film, and Broadway musical “Catch Me If You Can.” Abagnale entertained guests of the Daniel Island Speakers Series at the Daniel Island Club, where he spoke about his life as a con artist. The Daniel Island resident shared details of a post-parole career with the FBI and the family members and figures who shaped his early days.
