FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 23, 2004 edition of the paper, the cover and centerfold features revolved around the Davis Cup match between Belarus and the United States being held on Daniel Island at the Family Circle Tennis Center (now known as LTP Daniel Island). Players for both teams were featured. The U.S. players were Mardy Fish, Andy Roddick and the Bryan brothers, Mike and Bob. The Belarus players were Max Mirnyi, Vladimir Voltchkov, Andrei Karatchenia and Alexander Skrypko.

In news and events, it was reported that the fourth annual Park Day and the Race for the Cure were scheduled for the same day.

In school news, parents, students, teachers and administrators participated in the “Fall Festival of Learning” at Hanahan Elementary School, the island’s elementary school at the time.

In sports, chiropractor Dr. Jimmy Smith wrote an article on tennis elbow.

TEN YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 24, 2009 edition of the paper, the centerfold featured an article on the 911 emergency system on Daniel Island, including an update about cell phones versus land lines, city and county jurisdictional issues, and the effect of a consolidated dispatch system.

The cover story was about the Osprey Trail, a Daniel Island Garden Club project that transformed an overgrown, weeded two-acre site in front of the Daniel Island School into a peaceful meandering trail. It was dedicated on Sept. 16, 2009.

In sports, the DISA U14 and U18 soccer teams won Florida tournaments and the island-wide Get Fit Challenge had a leaderboard shake up, with Alesya Macatol, Amy Daniel and Julie Gustavson rotating among the top percentage of weight loss.

FIVE YEARS AGO

In the Sept. 25, 2014 edition of the paper, it was reported that the possibility of a drive-thru national coffee shop, could be coming to Daniel Island’s town center, if a variance to a City ordinance was approved. The building was to be located on the empty lot on Seven Farms Drive between the pond next to what is now LTP Daniel Island/Volvo Car Stadium and the 225 Seven Farms Drive office building. This plan never came to fruition.

Also in the news, part two of Frank Abagnale’s presentation at the DI Speaker’s Series focused on tips on how to protect yourself from identity theft.

In sports, Bishop England lost to Timberland.
