DIS students earn "medals" at S.C. Science Olympiad!

Science rocks! Just ask a group of seventh grade students at Daniel Island School who recently took part in the Science Olympiad at Newberry College. Led by teacher/advisor Dave Englehart, the DIS team took home two second place awards, two fourth place awards, as well as several other “medal” finishes of sixth place or higher. The event offers interscholastic academic competition in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, problem solving, and technology.

More than 20 middle school teams from all across the state took part in the competition. DIS tied for 13th place overall.

The winning teams:

Anatomy and Physiology - 11th place; team of Aanika Dhawan and Pilar Florez.

Ecology - 4th place; team of Leah Heineck and Dominik Dimicco

Experimental Design - 2nd place; team of Leah Heineck, Nate Heineck, and Dominik Dimicco.

Fast Facts - 5th place; team of Luther Young and Dominik Dimicco.

Meteorology - 7th place; team of Sarah Smith and Luther Young.

Optics - 7th place; team of Leah Heineck and Connor Fitzpatrick.

Pentathlon - 2nd place; team of Luther Young, Nate Heineck, Dominik Dimicco, and Connor Fitzpatrick.

Reach for the Stars - 7th place; team of Aanika Dhawan and Pilar Florez.

Scrambler - 3rd place; team of Sarah Smith and Nolan Kiefer.

Wright Stuff - 5th place; team of James Thompson and Connor Fitzpatrick.

Write It, Do It - 9th place; team of Karoline Surdyk and Pilar Florez.
