Events celebrate legacy of MLK

With school out and many businesses recognizing the national holiday on Monday, Jan. 20, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., here are some local events that celebrate the iconic civil rights leader.

• The 2020 MLK Youth Speak-Out Poetry Slam! will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 2-4 p.m. at the Charleston County Main Library downtown at 68 Calhoun Street. Marcus Amaker, Charleston’s poet laureate, will return as emcee by popular demand. There will be food, and prizes for the winners.

• The annual MLK Parade will take place in downtown Charleston on Monday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m.- noon. Last year, 131 bands, marchers, floats, and groups marched in the parade as an estimated audience of 3,000 cheered them on. The parade route will run from Burke High School along Fishburne Street, then north to Sumter Street, east along Sumter Street to King Street, and then south to Marion Square, turning east onto Calhoun Street.

• The city of Charleston and YWCA Greater Charleston will sponsor a concert titled “Hold Fast to the Dream” honoring the legacy of The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, at First Baptist Church of James Island, located at 1110 Camp Road. Doors will open at 4 p.m. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature Lowcountry Voices, one of Charleston’s most outstanding choral groups, under the direction of Mr. Nathan L. Nelson. Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, along with Reverends Charlie L. Murray Jr. of First Baptist Church of James Island, Marshall Blalock of First Baptist Church of Charleston, and Alex Sands, Pastor at Kingdom Life Church of Simpsonville, SC, will speak at the concert, emphasizing Dr. King’s legacy and the need for unity and conciliation among all citizens.
