Fishing class slated for March 26 at library

Last week, the article (in the Daniel Island News) about Lucy Boyle moved me to try and help. So on March 26, I will be teaching a fishing class at the Daniel Island Library from 9 a.m. till noon. I am asking attendees to make a donation (of any size) to the Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund. A special box is available in the library for drop off donations. In the class, we will cover how to identify fish holding areas and techniques to catch more fish. More importantly, we will each be helping to make something positive come out of this tragedy. Please join me on March 26.

Winter storm Jonas brought freezing temperatures, gale force winds and a little bit of snow to the Lowcountry. Given the truly awful conditions, not a lot of people went fishing on Saturday. I did and it was very uncomfortable. However, the bad weather did not keep the Redfish from biting.

Most of the fish were shallow and found a Z-Man Trout Trick (Shrimp Po Boy) irresistible. This is a new lure for me and I am still getting the hang of fishing it. One key thing I have learned is that I catch more fish when rigging a Trout Trick on a 3/16th ounce lead head jig. This combination seems to have a rate of descent that triggers more strikes. A big hop and a long stop retrieve is what the Redfish wanted on Saturday. Most of the strikes occurred during the long stop.
