Fishing just got a lot easier!

This week, summer-like conditions made for hot temperatures and great fishing. On Saturday, it was 91 degrees. Given a week of hot weather, the water temperature jumped into the lower 70-degree range and summer fishing patterns began to take hold. Fishing just got a lot easier. A multitude of fish species are now abundant in our rivers and creeks. Redfish, trout, flounder, blue fish, lady fish and even Spanish mackerel are seemingly everywhere.

Now is a great time to take your family and friends fishing. Something is almost always biting. So, I invited my friends Donna and Charlotte to join me Saturday morning. After launching the skiff, I asked them what species they wanted to catch. Both immediately said redfish. They had even brought redfish “candy” (mud minnows) with them. With the target species identified, we set out for a shallow area that is adjacent to a slight channel. For the past week or so, a school of redfish has been hanging around the channel and feeding on baitfish around low tide. Luck was with us as we spotted the school shortly after our arrival. Charlotte cast a jig tipped with a mud minnow in front of the school and waited. A few seconds later, she was fighting a solid red. Donna cast her bait into the area and hooked up, too. We landed the fish just long enough to take a few pictures then returned them to the channel. The rest of the day was pretty much the same. Locate school. Cast. Catch fish.

Trout spawn in May. After the record breaking cold this winter and the subsequent trout die off, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources is requesting that anglers release all trout. Especially during spawning season. Thankfully, the waters around Daniel Island still hold a good number of trout. But, I am releasing all the trout I catch to help the population grow. For the next few weeks, I encourage you to do the same.
