Fishing tournaments offer great family fun

Get your poles and lures ready! The 7th Annual Daniel Island Kids’ Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 17 at Smythe Park Lake from 9 to 11 a.m. Participating families may want to arrive early to pick up their tournament packet and find a good spot to fish. I recommend locations with shade and a depth transition. Given the recent hot weather, baitfish and the predators that eat them are congregating in these areas. Good luck to all the anglers. I am looking forward to fishing with the tournament champion!

Fishing tournaments are a great way to spend time with your family. Years ago, my daughter, Maddie, and I began fishing the Carolina Lady Anglers Tournament. The first year we fished the event, Maddie won the Youth Angler Award. Since then, we have fished the tournament every year. Maddie graduated from college last month. So, we have been fishing the Carolina Lady Anglers tournament for a long time. For us, it is not important to win. We fish the event to spend time together and have fun.

The 2017 Carolina Lady Angler tournament was this past Saturday. Since our goal was to have fun, we invited the entire family to fish. Our tournament crew included Elliott (my son), Heather (Elliott’s better half), David (my brother), Jessie (my niece) and Sean (Jessie’s husband). For being in a fishing tournament, we did not fish very much. Our primary objective was to eat lunch at the Wando River Grill. However, on the ride up river, we made a few stops and caught several Redfish, Trout and Flounder. None were tournament grade so we let them go. We did not win any tournament prizes but we did have a great family fishing day.

I hope all participants in 7th Annual Daniel Island Kids’ Fishing Tournament have a great family fishing day.
