Going for Gold!

Daniel Island resident Sara Ashton could be heading to the Olympics! She competed in the Illinois Marathon on Saturday, April 28, and her performance qualified her for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Ashton also met the elite women’s qualifying standard for the Boston Marathon field 2019, by two minutes. According to Ashton, this was her first ever marathon – and she completed it in 39-degree weather and 18 mph winds!

The 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials will be held on February 29, 2020. According to an article about the event on the Team USA website, “the top three female and male finishers in the Olympic Trials who have met qualifying performance standards will be named to the U.S. Olympic Team that will compete at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.”
