Great anglers stay positive, even when the going gets tough!

Fishing and catching are not synonymous. Sometimes, the fish simply get the best of you. Last week, when fishing with my young neighbor, Luke, this was certainly the case. Luke and I always catch fish together. So, this was our expectation when we went fishing after he got out of school. When Luke and I launched my skiff, the tide was not optimal. A strong breeze made tough fishing conditions even more challenging. However, we were still confident that we would catch a lot of fish.

Our delusions of grandeur were quickly dashed upon the rocks of reality. After an hour of fishing, Luke and I did not have a single bite. Without any bites, we lacked the data to establish a fishing pattern. Without a fishing pattern, you do not catch lots of fish. It was a frustrating experience. Yet, Luke took it all in stride. He remained positive and kept fishing at a very high level. In my experience, these are the characteristics of a great angler. When things are not going their way, great anglers keep fishing and adjust what they are doing. Eventually, they figure things out. That is exactly what Luke did.

After a couple hours, without a single fish, I caught a small trout in 12 feet of water. Luke and I began focusing our fishing in areas that were 12 feet deep and started to catch a few fish. Fishing was still slow but at least we were not skunked. As the sun was setting, Luke spotted a school of redfish swimming along the shore. He quickly cast his lure ahead of the school and hooked a nice one. Like me, Luke prefers to fish with light tackle. I was impressed with how well he fought the fish on such a light spinning outfit. The fish was strong but no match for Luke’s angling technique. After a few minutes, a solid redfish joined us for a picture prior to release.

Fishing and catching are not synonymous. Unless of course, you are Luke!
