Greystar's revised Farr Street 'Overture' project heads back to city for review

Planning Commission to consider changes at March 15 meeting

During a community meeting called by regional developer Greystar last December on Daniel Island, the company introduced a series of design changes to a new, 55-and-over senior apartment complex they plan to construct on Farr Street. Known as “The Overture,” the project drew much in the way of communal consternation when it was first made public. But in response to feedback the company acquired from the community, alterations have been made.

Greystar outlined a revised design scheme for the building, much to the satisfaction of concerned citizens in attendance. The December meeting, in effect offered the public one of two final opportunities to be heard on the project. The second will be March 15, at a meeting of the City of Charleston Planning Commission.

The changes Greystar introduced at the December meeting included the reorientation and relocation of the structure, the buildings massing and realigning the Farr Street connection. Landscaped buffers were also discussed.

“The revised scheme presented that moved the building to the marsh front and Farr Street adjacent to the greenway is the design that we are proceeding with,” stated Greystar representative Tricia Peters.

In an email to The Daniel Island News, sources with Greystar confirmed that they have already presented initial parts of their new design to the City and that those revisions are currently working their way through the City of Charleston permitting process. The company will be presenting their modified, community feedback-inspired design as a whole at the upcoming March 15 meeting, giving citizens one more chance to voice their opinions on the project.

Should the revised project not meet City Planning approval, Greystar has stated that they will revert back to the former design, as that design was approved by the City and is still valid.

To view the design plans for the site, visit the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association’s Architectural Review Board office, located at 130 River Landing Drive, Suite 1-B. The March 15 City of Charleston Planning Commission meeting will be held at 5 p.m. at the Planning Commission meeting room, 2 George St., Charleston.
