Island-Wide Parking Enforcement to Start Mid to End of May

Provided by DINA

Back in March, Marie Delcioppo, Daniel Island Neighborhood Association (DINA) Safety Chair, met with the City of Charleston’s Traffic and Transportation Department to address parking violations and the island’s infrastructure needs.

From this meeting, she and the department realized the best course of action would be stepped-up island-wide enforcement.

“We [the City of Charleston and DINA] receive many requests for more restricted parking, stop signs, and crosswalks, and our residents share with us the many parking violations they witness throughout Daniel Island,” Delcioppo said.

“Unfortunately, we don’t know if more restricted parking is the answer, or if more stop signs are the answer,” Delcioppo explained. “Right now there are violations all over the place. If we can get a better handle on what violations are happening and where, we can be more strategic in implementing the appropriate solutions to alleviate them.”

The city will be dispatching parking enforcement officers, starting the middle to end of May, all across Daniel Island to crack down on violations. Residents are encouraged to be familiar with parking violations and to park their vehicles only in properly assigned areas.

“Once we clean up the current violations occurring, we can assess where those areas are that are really problematic and determine the best solution,” she said. “Is it a new stop sign? A new crosswalk? No parking signs? We feel the stepped-up enforcement gives us a little bit more data behind the actions we then take.”

Starting the middle to end of May, The City of Charleston Parking Enforcement Officers will be on Daniel Island citing violators.

Based on the most common violations we see on Daniel Island, residents should remember NOT to park:

• In front of mailboxes.

• Under “No Parking” and “Tow Away” signs.

• In the painted no parking triangles surrounding intersections and crosswalks.

• Within 30 feet of the approach to any stop sign or traffic-control signal.

• On painted crosswalks.

• Within 20 feet of a painted crosswalk.

• More than 1 foot away from the curb when parking on the street.

• Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.

• Alongside or across the street from road repairs or construction in order to avoid traffic obstructions.

• In front of a public or private driveway. Residents are encouraged to review the South Carolina Code of Laws Title 56 - Motor Vehicles; Chapter 5 – Uniform Act Regulation Traffic on Highways; Section 56-5-2530 - Stopping, standing or parking prohibited in specified places; exceptions (http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t56c005.php).
