The key to catching fish in March: Be flexible

March is a transitional time for weather and fish. For me, it is the most challenging month to be an angler. It is often very windy and the fish are on the move. So success one day usually does not carry over to the next. However, here is a tip to consistently put fish in the boat during March.

Be flexible. Trout are moving out of their winter haunts (deep holes and channels) and staging on ledges adjacent to the shallows. On warm sunny days, they push up onto the flats to eat (bait fish are back in the shallows). When a cold front pushes through (which they seem to do on a weekly basis in March), the Trout hunker down at the bottom of the ledge. The key to consistent success is changing with the conditions. If you work shallow, transitional ledges and deep, you will find and catch fish.

The lure that I use most often in March is a StreakZ 3.75 on Trout Eye jig. It can be fished effectively in the shallows, on the ledge and in the deep. My favorite color in March is Pearl.

Just a reminder, that the fishing class to benefit the Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund is Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Daniel Island Library. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone then!
