Kids fish! Enter the 6th Annual Daniel Island Kids Fishing Tournament

For the past week or so, I have been fishing for Tarpon in the Florida Keys. Thankfully, the fish have been most cooperative. Based upon fishing reports from back home, the fish there are cooperative as well. At least they are biting for (8 year old) Kyle Thaxton. He caught a nice Redfish while fishing the shallows with his Dad. Kyle’s secret bait was fresh cut mullet that he cast out and let sit. Great work Kyle!

While on the topic of kids fishing, the 6th Annual Daniel Island Kids Fishing Tournament sponsored by the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club and Presented by Scout Boats will be held on Saturday, June 18, Father’s Day Weekend, at Smythe Park Lake. Children ages 4 to 15 of families who reside or work on Daniel Island are eligible to enter as anglers in the tournament. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Eligible species are largemouth bass, panfish, and mullet, all catch and release.

Awards will be given for the first, second, and third longest fish of these species caught, plus an award for the longest “Mystery Fish” caught and for any tagged largemouth bass. The penultimate award is the Grand Champion Award for the longest fish of the three eligible species. The Grand Champion will win a half day fishing trip for two people with me.

No fishing license is required. Angler Registration Forms and Tournament Instructions can be found at various locations throughout Daniel Island including Publix, Qwik Pack & Ship, Daniel Island Library, DIPOA, and SunTrust Bank. Also, online at the Daniel Island Inshore Fishing Club website (danielislandinshorefishing.com). Pre-registration is requested, $5 per angler; onsite registration at the tournament $8 per angler. Please check in at the Registration Table at Smythe Park between 8am and 8:30am on the day of the Tournament to receive your Tournament Kit. Fishing will be from 9am to 11:00am followed by an Awards Ceremony and refreshments by Publix.
