Land use and zoning activities on Daniel Island

Below are issues being brought before the various City of Charleston boards and committees that are specific to land use and zoning on Daniel Island. All of the meetings are open for public comment except the TRC meetings. The location and time of meetings can be found on the DINA website or e-mail zoning@dineighborhoodassociation.org.

City of Charleston Technical Review Committee (TRC) reviews site plans and subdivisions for compliance with City of Charleston codes - meets weekly. April 27 meeting: Two issues of impact to Daniel Island: 1. Farr street extension preliminary subdivision plat to create three lots and right-of-way extension. 2. Farr street extension road construction plan for a right-of-way extension.

City of Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals (Site Design) hears requests for zoning variances and special exceptions and meets monthly. Three issues of impact to Daniel Island will be heard at the May 3: 1. 259 Seven Farms Road - Request a variance from Sec 54-343.1 to omit required parking lot islands in a surface parking lot. 2. Rhoden Island Drive - Request reconsideration of the Board’s decision on April 5, 2017 to approve a variance from Sec 54-327 to allow the removal of 12 grand trees. 3. Fairbanks Drive - Request a variance from Sec 54-327 to allow the removal of four grand trees. Request a special exception from Sec 54-327 to allow the removal of one grand tree.

City of Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals – Zoning (BZA-Z) - Hears requests concerning zoning regulations for the use of property, density of residential development, parking, and the height, area and location of buildings - meets twice a month. Next meeting to take place on May 2: No issues of impact to Daniel Island.

City of Charleston Design Review Board reviews new construction, exterior alterations, and signage for commercial or non-residential (more than eight multi-family units) projects - meets twice a month. Next meeting to take place on May 1. One issue of impact to Daniel Island: 65 Fairchild - Request approval of sample panel for new office building.

City of Charleston Planning Commission reviews plans, planning-related ordinances such as zoning ordinances, rezoning, subdivision requests, concept plans, and street names - meets monthly at 5 p.m. on the third Wednesday. Next meeting to take place on May 17. Agenda not yet published.
