Local theatre company to perform ‘Madama Butterfly: The Untold Story’ at Blackbaud Atrium

Three performances to take place Jan. 25-27

For their debut in the Daniel Island community, the South of Broadway Theatre Company (SOBTC) will perform ‘Madama Butterfly: The Untold Story,’ at the Blackbaud Atrium from Jan. 25 to 27. The SOBTC will be the “theatre company in residence” at the planned Daniel Island Performing Arts Center (DIPAC), which is set to open in late 2019.

The opera, explained Producer Mary Gould, is a rendition on Giacomo Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly.”

“It’s Madame Butterfly with a little different take on it but all of the Puccini music is intact,” said Gould, who is founder of both SOBTC and DIPAC. “I think the point of view we’re taking is that of the American Consul. I think there is a lot of material there that can create an even more compelling story line and add to the poignancy of the devastation of the end result of the opera.”

Although Blackbaud’s Atrium is “the perfect setting” for the performance, continued Gould, preparations have been a bit challenging. With all of the hard work put in to transforming the space, the cast and crew’s main goal is to have a successful performance, she said.

“I think our goal is just to work super hard to make sure that the product that we want to present to the Daniel Island community represents what we want them to see for the future,” added Gould. “Producing something offsite in a facility that is not set up for a theatre production is a monster. We are having to bring an excess of 60 lighting fixtures to light the Blackbaud facility. The logistics of this are very challenging.”

This set of three performances is the first segment of the company’s traveling itinerary for their regular season, explained Gould.

“The performance is significant because it is the first of several events that we are going to be taking to itinerant locations,” said Gould. “We have a facility here at South of Broadway but we’re in the process of rebranding our product in order to be in residence of the Daniel Island Performing Arts Center. We’re starting to bring product out of this facility in North Charleston and into other facilities and this is the first one.”

Prior to the first performance, on Jan. 19, Bin 526 will be hosting a free pre-party for the community to attend, continued Gould. Attendees will be able to purchase tickets and enjoy performances from select members of the cast.

Tickets for the opera are $35 before the event and $45 the day of and are available online at http://southofbroadway.com/. To avoid online fees, interested community members can also call Daniel Island resident and South of Broadway Board President Ruthie Hille at (703) 855-0517.

“All I can say is it is a perfect setting,” said Gould. “The Atrium and botanical garden feel is just the perfect setting for Madama Butterfly. We’re really excited to be working there. Blackbaud has been amazing in just doing everything they can to help us…We are looking forward to joining the Daniel Island community.”
