Lowcountry 'Freedom Reigns Festival' to debut Sept. 2-11

Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties will be home to a new multi-day celebration in September. The inaugural “Lowcountry Freedom Reigns Festival” will take place September 2-11, with events planned all across the tri-county area.

According to organizers, the festival is poised to become a staple, much-anticipated event each year. Those responsible for planning the event have designed it to be an opportunity for all citizens of the Lowcountry and beyond to come together in unity to celebrate our diversity and freedoms as Americans.

“Nowadays, there seems to be a festival for everything under the sun,” said John Linton, the festival’s founder. “Other than the Fourth of July, we rarely come together as a community to celebrate our freedoms and it’s our hope that this festival will give us a reason to unite and celebrate our diversities.”

“Whether it’s freedom of thought, freedom of press, freedom of speech or freedom of everyday life in America, we have many freedoms to appreciate but we have a long way to go before freedom is truly embraced by all and afforded to all,” continued Linton.

The festival will kick off this Saturday with family events in Marion Square and Azalea Park. Between Sept. 2-11, thousands of tri-county residents and visitors are expected to participate in events ranging from concerts to educational symposiums and debates to family-friendly gatherings. The inaugural festival will conclude on Sept. 11 in conjunction with the annual 9/11 Silent Walk across the Ravenel Bridge. The majority of festival events are free and open to the public.

“Our freedoms depend to a great extent on the diversity of the people and the cultures in this country,” said Charleston County Council Chair Vic Rawl, who expressed the county’s support for the upcoming event. “And, that’s important to us.”

“We are proud to support this festival,” added Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler. “It’s time for us to put away our differences and celebrate and expand freedom of Americans.”

Dorchester County Chairman Jay Byars was unable to attend a recent press conference about the event but shared the following statement.

“I am pleased to support the 2017 Freedom Reigns Festival in the tri-county area. This multi-faceted event will highlight the freedoms we enjoy as Americans and foster better relationships among all our citizens.”

Proceeds from the festival will benefit tri-county area child abuse prevention charities and improving the firemen’s memorial park for the Charleston Nine on Savannah Highway.
