Mrs. French retires from DIS; Mrs. Shaw named principal at Cainhoy Elementary Scholl

In a letter to the school community dated May 31, Mrs. French announced her retirement as principal from the Daniel Island School and the Berkeley County School District (BCSD).

French wrote, “It is with much thought and introspect that I inform you of my decision to retire…I appreciate the support over the last 5 years and I have faith that the quality of our staff will carry the torch and continue to move the school forward. I will be so proud to read of the great things that are accomplished by the school and our students.”

French said her decision to retire was in large part due to her desire to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Dr. Glendra Levine, BCSD Chief Human Resources Officer, explained the process for hiring a new principal, “The position is presently advertised and will be advertised for two weeks on our website and on the SCASA website. A stakeholder meeting will be scheduled with representatives from stakeholder groups linked to the school. First round interviews will be held, followed by second round interviews with the top candidates from the first round. A parent and teacher will participate on the first round interview team. The top candidate will be recommended to the school board for approval.”

Aidra Shaw, who served as the assistant principal at Daniel Island School for the past two years, has been named the new principal of Cainhoy Elementary School. The Berkeley County School Board approved the appointment at their meeting on Tuesday, May 24. Shaw will begin her new assignment in June to prepare for the upcoming school year.

“I am so excited to be the new principal of Cainhoy Elementary School,” said Shaw. “I am looking forward to this opportunity to continue the Cainhoy legacy of excellence. It is especially an honor since my husband is a graduate of Cainhoy High School.”

Shaw has served the tri-county area as an educator in various roles for the past 20 years, beginning her career as a Reading/Language Arts elementary teacher in Charleston County in 1996. In 2007, Shaw joined Berkeley County as a fifth grade Math, Science and Social Studies teacher.
