New DICA board members elected

Two Daniel Island residents have been elected to serve on the Daniel Island Community Association Board for a two-year term. Continuing on the board will be incumbent Greg Turner, who has served in the role since 2015, and newcomer Bob Sauer. A total of six candidates were vying for the two open spots.

According to an announcement from the Daniel Island Property Owners Association, approximately 13.5 percent of DICA members participated in the election, which constitutes a quorum as required by DICA bylaws.

Turner first moved to Daniel Island 12 years ago to help his son, Dr. Charlie Turner, open his optometry practice, Island Eye Care, on Seven Farms Drive. In addition to his DICA role, he has been involved in many aspects of the community since then, including serving as a past president of the Daniel Island Business Association and past president of the 254 condo complex.

“It’s very gratifying when your neighbors acknowledge your work over the past two years through their votes,” said Turner. “I would like to thank all the residents who ran for being willing to work for all of us. The next two years will be important as we begin the transition to a resident-controlled board. Many aspects such as the reserve dollars for the DICA assets will be reviewed. We will continue to work with Jane Baker’s fine team to review all contracts and costs to keep our dues at a reasonable rate, making certain that we treat every dollar we ask from our neighbors as precious.”

Sauer, who moved to Daniel Island with his wife, Ellie, in 2005, has also been active in various community organizations. In his first years on the island, he volunteered at the Daniel Island School and Cainhoy Elementary and Middle Schools. In addition, Sauer has been involved in the Daniel Island Garden Club, the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association and the Daniel Island Historical Society, among other groups. He stated earlier this month that in seeking the DICA board position, he was interested in assisting the board as it evolves with the island’s growing population.

“As Daniel Island migrates from a developer-directed community to one governed by the residents themselves we will have the opportunity to learn many important lessons in community government and oversight,” said Sauer. “I am both honored and humbled to be given the opportunity to help shape what our community will become.”
