Bike Thefts
A number of bike thefts have been reported on Daniel Island in recent weeks, according to Team 5 of the City of Charleston Police Department. Lt. James Byrne noted that approximately seven bikes were taken between November 1 and December 15 from the garage areas of apartment complexes on the island. All bikes were locked, but in each case the lock was cut. In one case, two bikes were locked together at a bike rack and only one was taken.
“They’re being selective in what they are taking,” said Byrne.
Lt. Byrne recommended that for long term storage bike owners should use a bar lock or U-lock to secure bikes, as opposed to a cable lock that can easily be cut. The cable lock works best for short term storage, especially if the bike is within eyesight and close proximity, he added.
Car Break-ins
On November 27, several car owners reported that their vehicles were entered by an unknown suspect or suspects while they were dining at a restaurant on River Landing Drive. Police were called to the scene about 8:30 p.m. and noted that six vehicles were entered, but only three of them had items missing. All of the vehicles were unlocked at the time. About two hours later, police were alerted that a group of teens was “acting suspicious” in the area. After responding to the call, two of the teens fled and another two were stopped for questioning. One of the suspects was arrested after it was discovered that he had marijuana, drug paraphernalia and pills in his possession, as well as items reported missing from the vehicles. Lt. Byrne noted that the perpetrators were Daniel Island residents. The suspect has a pending appearance in family court.
Construction Site Thefts
In late November, police were called to the scene of a home under construction in Daniel Island Park after it was reported that some building materials were stolen from the site. The case remains under investigation. In a separate case, work trailers at a construction site on Island Park Drive were forced open by an unknown suspect or suspects sometime between December 5 and December 7, according to police. Tools and electronics items were taken.
Gun Missing
Police are also investigating a case involving a gun that was reported missing from a home on Creek Landing Street in Daniel Island Park. The owner believes the firearm was taken sometime between October 25 and December 2. It was reported missing on December 4. There was no sign of forced entry.
Hit & Run
A hit and run collision was also recently reported, said Lt. Byrne, in the area of 305 Seven Farms Apartments. Two witnesses observed someone hit a parked vehicle and then drove away. No injuries were reported.
Credit Card Theft
A Smythe Park resident notified police last week that her credit card had been compromised. According to the victim, an unknown suspect racked up some $5000 worth of purchases using the account associated with the card, which remained in the victim’s possession. The charges were made at various locations throughout the Charleston area. The Central Detectives Division is investigating. Lt. Byrne urged residents to keep a close eye on credit and debit cards at all times and to make sure the cards are never out of your sight.
