Police Blotter - October 3, 2019

The following incidents were taken from City of Charleston Police Department reports within the Team 5 area (Daniel Island and parts of the Cainhoy peninsula) between August 15, 2019 and September 23, 2019. This is part two of a series of reports on the cases in this date range.

ABANDONED VESSEL

While out navigating the waterways around Daniel Island after Hurricane Dorian, the Charleston Police Department’s Harbor Patrol observed an abandoned vessel. Named “The Good Wood,” the boat was discovered on Sept. 11 near Nowell Creek. It had apparently run aground and showed signs of damage. Police are investigating.

BIKE THEFT

A bike was stolen from the garage area of a residence on Longkeep Lane on Sept. 3. Police say the bike was locked up at the time, but the chain was cut. There were no witnesses. The case is under investigation.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

A motorist was stopped by police on I-526 near the Clements Ferry Road interchange at 1:48 am on Aug. 22 after officers received a call about the vehicle drifting in and out of the lane. Suspecting the driver may be intoxicated, a stop was initiated by officers. After determining the driver’s blood alcohol level was “almost double the legal limit,” the driver was placed under arrest.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A woman notified police on Aug. 18 that she thought she had heard gunshots in the area of 1971 Clements Ferry Rd. She also reported that she saw a blue Chevrolet leave the area around the same time. Police investigated but did not find any evidence of shots being fired (no shell casings, witnesses or injuries).

GOLF CART THEFT

An individual came to the Team 5 office on Sept. 13 to report that his golf cart had been stolen. The vehicle had been parked at 225 River Landing Drive at the time of the theft. The owner had the keys in his possession. The case is under investigation.

IDENTITY THEFT

An individual contacted police on Aug. 21 after someone had reportedly stolen his identity and opened an account in his name. An unknown person or persons had charged $9800 to the fraudulent account. According to the victim’s bank, his social security number had been used to open the account. The case is under investigation.

LARCENY BY FALSE PRETENCES

A Daniel Island resident notified police on Sept. 4 that someone sold him six fake tickets to a Clemson game. The victim responded to an ad for the tickets on Craigslist, met the seller and paid for them, only later to find out the tickets were not valid.

SHOTGUN FOUND

A shotgun that had fallen off the back of a pick-up truck was turned into the Team 5 office around 6 p.m. on Aug. 26. The gun apparently fell off the truck near the intersection of Barfield Street and Daniel Island Drive.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON ON SCHOOL GROUNDS

The school resource officer at Daniel Island School notified police on Aug. 19 of a suspicious person walking outside on school grounds. Officers made contact with the individual, who had a foreign accent. Upon conversing with him, officers determined he was from the Netherlands and was just visiting the area.

THEFT

On Aug. 17, police were called to a hotel on Daniel Island in reference to a report of two guests who vacated the facility without paying after a four night stay. According to police, one of the guests had asked for a room stating that their home had burned down in Orangeburg. The guest’s credit card was denied after hotel staff attempted to run it for payment. The other guest promised to bring cash to pay for the room, but never did.

THEFTS FROM BUILDINGS

Police officers responded to a business in the 2200 block of Clements Ferry Road on Aug. 21 in reference to a theft from a building. According to police, an employee at the site discovered some of her prescription medications missing from her belongings. She believed someone had taken them while she was working.

On Aug. 26, an individual reported the theft of a Pelican Trailblazer kayak from a Daniel Island apartment community. The kayak was valued at $200.

In a third incident, a complainant told officers on Sept. 2 that an individual had stolen his cell phone from a Daniel Island restaurant. The victim and the suspect were apparently arguing and after the suspect left the victim noticed his phone was missing.

A bike locked up at a residence on Farr Street was stolen on Sept. 6. Police noted that a witness observed a suspect “walk out” with the bike.

VANDALISM

Officers responded to a home under construction on Yaupon Drive after receiving a report of vandalism at the site. A bundle of wires going into the home had been cut, according to police. The case is under investigation.
