Police Blotter - September 26, 2019

The following incidents were taken from City of Charleston Police Department reports within the Team 5 area (Daniel Island and parts of the Cainhoy peninsula) between August 15, 2019 and September 23, 2019. This is part one of a series of reports on the cases in this date range. Part two will appear in a future issue.

CHILD HIT BY CAR

A 10-year-old boy riding a bike was struck by a car at the intersection of Daniel Island Drive and Pierce Street on Sept. 18. The victim was reportedly on his way to school at the time the accident occurred. Police stated that based on witness reports at the scene, the vehicle had been stopped at the stop sign prior to the incident. After the car began to move through the intersection, the biker started to move through the crosswalk – and the collision occurred. The bicyclist was found to be at fault, noted police. Although he suffered no visible injuries, stated officers, he did complain of soreness in his leg. No citations were issued.

ATM/CREDIT CARD FRAUD

A complainant notified police on Aug. 15 that someone had used his Verizon Wireless account and Pay Pal credit card account to open another cell phone account. The victim received a $2000 receipt from on online boutique for a transaction to the fraudulent account. The charge also showed up in his Pay Pal account. The case has been assigned to a central detective with CPD.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Team 5 officers responded to a residence at Fairbanks Oak Alley on Sept. 15 in reference to a possible burglary. Upon arrival, a complainant told them she had observed two females and two males in the hallway of a condo building jiggling a door lock to a residence. CPD documented the case but said no criminal activity had taken place. The case was deemed to be a civil matter.

HIT AND RUN ACCIDENTS

Several hit and run accident reports were taken by officers of Team 5 over the last month. The first occurred on Aug. 15 around 4:30 p.m. on I-526. A victim reported she was driving in the far left lane when another vehicle attempting to merge struck her car and left the scene without stopping. She took photos of the vehicle’s license plate and turned them over to police. No injuries were reported but the victim stated the incident caused about $1000 in damage to her vehicle.

Another hit and run took place on Aug. 22 around 7:45 a.m. on 526-eastbound. A victim reported that as he was merging another driver shouted obscenities at him, sped up and then struck his car. The case is under investigation.

On Sept. 11, a third incident was reported to police, who stated a car parked in front of a residence on Ole Oak Drive was hit by an unknown vehicle.

DRUGS AND NARCOTICS

On Aug. 16, an officer observed a vehicle speeding around 1 a.m. and initiated a traffic stop. After stopping the vehicle and making contact with the driver, the officer noticed an odor of marijuana emanating from the car. After finding marijuana in the vehicle, the officer gave the driver a ticket.

Two days later, a vehicle near the intersection of Highway 41 and Reflectance was observed traveling at a high rate of speed by an officer. The officer pulled the car over, made contact with the driver and smelled marijuana. The driver admitted to using the substance and was issued a citation for possession of marijuana.

THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE PARTS

A resident of Seven Farms Drive notified police on Aug. 16 that someone had stolen four lug nuts from a tire on his car, which was parked at the residence.

CFD RECEIVES STRANGE DELIVERY

An unknown male dropped off a strange package of materials to the City of Charleston Fire Station on Daniel Island on the afternoon of Aug. 16. It was turned over to the CPD bomb team, who deemed it “non-dangerous” and determined the material to be blood splatter squibs, which are used by filmmakers as “fake blood.”
