Police investigate DI car break-ins, thefts

A string of vehicle break-ins, damage to property, and a theft from a garage over the weekend in Smythe Park and Center Park have prompted police to step up patrols in the area. The incidents took place on Daniel Island Drive, Pierce Street and Purcell Street.

According to Lt. James Byrne, commander of Daniel Island-based Team 5, officers received complaints on Sunday, February 14, that two unlocked vehicles had been entered by an unknown suspect or suspects, but only Nerf toys and some loose change were stolen. The rear windows of three additional cars were broken but not entered, he added, and two unlocked garages were entered.

“The Nerf toys were found in one of the garages,” stated Lt. Byrne. “And a bike taken from the other garage was found in a pond nearby.”

Lt. Byrne added that the victims in the cases declined filing official police reports for various reasons. Still, officers are continuing to investigate and have learned some information that could lead to identifying those responsible, said Byrne.

“Even with the victims declining reports initially, Team 5 is continuing to follow up on the weekend’s events, and charges could still arise from these incidents” he continued. “Extra patrols have been ordered for the neighborhood, as well. We will continue to monitor this area as the school year moves closer to Spring Break.”

Anyone with information that could help Team 5 in their investigation, or if you need non-emergent police assistance, please call Charleston Police Consolidated Dispatch at (843) 743-7200. All emergencies should be directed to 911.
