A 'reel' good show!

In the winter, I spend most of my fishing time looking for fish. I search visually in the shallows or in deeper water, using the fish finder on my skiff. In the spring, things change and the fish show themselves - typically, by chasing food in the shallows or feeding near the surface of the water.

On Saturday, for the first time this year, fished showed themselves. I was working a submerged oyster bar in about 5 feet of water. The trout bite was steady on a Z-Man TRD Ned Rig. As I was releasing a fish, I noticed grass shrimp jumping near the marsh grass behind the bar. About then, a couple of redfish began sloshing about and eating the shrimp. A quick cast into the area produced a crushing strike.

After releasing the redfish, I looked down the marsh bank and observed grass shrimp jumping again. The steady trout bite was quickly forgotten and the rest of the day was spent catching redfish that were showing themselves. In the spring, fishing is easier. Especially, when the fish are eating in the shallows.

If you would like to learn more about catching fish that show themselves, please plan to attend my fishing class on April 21. The event is being held at the Pierce Park Pavilion from 10 a.m. until noon. After the class, lunch will be provided. Additionally, there will be breakout sessions on casting, rigging soft plastic lures and tying fishing knots. The class is free. However, I am asking attendees to consider a donation to the Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund or the Respeck Initiative (that is working to restore our Trout stocks after the die-off caused by the snowstorm). If you would like to attend, please confirm your seat with an email to captgregp@gmail.com.
