A roundup of Rotary activity in January
The Rotary Club of Daniel Island kicked off 2020 with a number of activities.
At the Jan. 8 breakfast meeting, the club reviewed committee updates from the chairmen of the community service, membership, and international project committees. That evening, Rotarians took a field trip to Trident Technical College Aeronautical Training Center.
On Jan. 15, Nicole Stewart with HealthMarkets Insurance was the breakfast meeting speaker. She discussed the different Medicare plans available as well as other health care insurance opportunities.
Dondi Costin, president of Charleston Southern University, was the speaker at the Jan. 22 meeting. Costin, a retired military chaplain, talked about the importance of making an impact on young people’s lives and the improvements being made at the university.
On Jan. 29, Nanci Shipman and Dr. Jay Demarco addressed concerns about the opioid crisis as part of the Daniel Island speaker series. Shipman, a former Daniel Island resident, shared a moving story about the death of her teenage son after being prescribed opioids after a lacrosse injury. She had feared for her other son’s safety when he also suffered a sports injury. Demarco described how he treated her younger son successfully with an alternative non-opioid approach. All of those in attendance appreciated this emotional and educational discussion.
Nearly 20 members received the Paul Harris Fellow designation as recognition for their generous contributions.
Also, in support of the Hibben warming shelter, the club held a drive to collect undergarments and volunteered several hours at the church in Mount Pleasant during the cold winter nights.
