PBC adds half-day 5K class

Providence Baptist Church is growing its half-day preschool program to include a 5-year-old half-day kindergarten class for the 2017-18 school year. There will be 12 seats available for children who have completed 4K.

Anne Lynch, the preschool’s director, pushed for the 5K classroom addition after hearing concerns from families in the Daniel Island community. “There is a need here on Daniel Island for this type of class,” explained Lynch. “There are two programs in Mt. Pleasant but none here. There are many children who are not quite ready for full-day Kindergarten or are not old enough.”

A teacher, who has taught kindergarten for 10 years, has already been tapped for the new classroom position.

Parents or guardians interested in learning more should contact Anne Lynch at Providence Baptist Church Preschool by email, preschool@providencecharleston.org or by phone, 843-971-5275. Registration for the 2017-18 school year is underway. Registration materials are available for download on the website, www.pbcpreschool.com.

The Berkeley County School District recently announced the first year teacher nominees for its “Rookie Teacher of the Year” award. Three teachers on the list of 27 instructors represent Daniel Island/Cainhoy area schools - Caroline Zomer from Daniel Island School, Demmie White from Cainhoy Elementary School, and Suzette Coors from Philip Simmons Elementary School. The nominees were selected based on the following criteria: conducting effective instructional planning; providing and facilitating quality instruction; organizing and implementing a culture of learning; managing student behavior and classroom events; developing effective relationships with students, parents/guardians, and peers; modeling professional demeanor and behavior; and serving as an advocate for students and public education as a whole. Three finalists will be selected from among the nominees to be interviewed by March 24. The winner will be announced at the district’s PRIDE Celebration on May 16.

Two DIS students win awards in writing contest

Daniel Island School sixth grade students Mallory Holleman and Sarah Legare Smith have earned awards in the Patriot’s Pen Writing Contest, sponsored by the VFW. According to the VFW website, each year more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the youth essay competition. This year’s theme was “The America I believe in.” Both Holleman and Legare were recognized at an award ceremony last weekend at the North Charleston VFW Post. Legare placed first in the district and second in the state for her essay and Holleman placed third in the district. They competed against students in grades 6-8 that attend public and private schools in Colleton, Charleston and Berkeley Counties. The students wrote their essays as part of an assignment in their advanced English class, taught by Ginger Colvin.
