Spam sandwiches and fishing?!

Spending time with your friends and family is what makes fishing special. So when my daughter (Maddie) and nieces (Jessie and Amee) asked me to go fishing, I was thrilled. Of course, fishing with Maddie is more like a picnic than an actual fishing trip. However, since the main purpose of fishing is to spend time together, a picnic is just fine with me. We even had Maddie’s favorite picnic food, fried Spam sandwiches (it’s a Hawaiian thing)!

The evening before our trip, I located a school of big Redfish on an expansive shallow flat. After catching a couple, I left them biting (hoping they would still be hungry in the morning). Thankfully, they were! The tide was high and falling when we arrived at the flat. I positioned the boat adjacent to a slight channel (hoping the fish would move into the deeper water as the tide fell). While we waited for this to happen, the Trout bite was pretty good. We even kept several for dinner. As the tide fell, Redfish began moving into the channel and the Trout were quickly forgotten. We watched as a big Red approached Amee’s bait (a live finger mullet on a lead head jig). To our surprise, a yet unseen fish ate Jessie’s finger mullet. When Jessie was fighting her fish, Amee hooked up as well. Doubles!

For the next hour or so, Maddie, Jessie and Amee enjoyed non-stop Redfish action. At one time, we even had three fish on at the same time. The fish were still biting when the girls decided it was time for lunch. So I got to fish while they ate Spam sandwiches. However, the sandwiches looked so good, I quit fishing too! While eating lunch, we could see the school of Redfish milling about the channel. Yet, we did not feel compelled to try and catch one. We were content to simply spent time together and that was the best catch of all.
