Thankful for fishing!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I always enjoy a gathering of family and friends. When the gathering includes eating copious amounts of food, how can you beat that? One way to up the ante is by going fishing!

Cooler temperatures and shorter days have the fish eating their own Thanksgiving feast. This was particularly evident (last week) when fishing with my friend and Daniel Island resident, Dave Kottka. Dave and I have known each other for a long time (via the Daniel Island Fishing Club) but this was the first time we fished together. We started our trip just as the tide began to fall. The plan was to target Trout around creek drains then switch to Redfish near low tide. We both were casting Z-Man StreakZ 3.75 lures and the Trout found them to be irresistible. At our first stop, we released 20+ Trout. Our second and third stops produced similar results. We got tired of catching Trout and switched to Redfish long before the tide was low.

We moved to a small flat that was about two feet deep (and dropping fast). It was a bit too deep to actually see the fish but we could barely make out the wake as the school cruised along the shoreline. I cast my StreakZ ahead of the school and hooked a Redfish right off the bat. Unfortunately, the hook pulled early in the fight. So Dave and I set about trying to relocate the school. It took several minutes (because the water was still too deep), but we eventually found them. This time Dave hooked up and landed an over-slot Redfish. We picked at the fish (both Trout and Reds) for the next hour or so and then decided to call it a day. We quit counting fish when our count exceeded sixty. Not sure how many fish we released, but it was a lot!

If you want to make this Thanksgiving extra special, take your family and friends fishing.
