Try fishing with top water lures

Spring is here. The water is warming up (currently 68 degrees) and the fish are actively eating. Given these conditions, I began fishing with top water lures last week.

On Thursday evening, the wind was calm and the water surface was smooth as glass. Perfect conditions for casting top water lures. When launching the skiff, I was attacked by a thick swarm of gnats. It was miserable until I found a bottle of No Gnats bug spray. This time of year, bug spray is essential. Don’t leave home without it!

With the gnats finally at bay, I drifted with the outgoing tide looking for feeding activity in the shallows. It did not take long to locate a school of Trout eating small baitfish in the mouth of a creek. While the fish were actively feeding, they refused to strike my lure (a Lucky Craft Sammy 100). After several casts without a strike, I switched to a smaller profile Lucky Craft Sammy 65. Then it was game on. Trout were literally jumping out of the water when striking the lure. A quick twitch, twitch (no pause) retrieve triggered most of the strikes.

For the next hour or so, I caught and released a Trout on nearly every cast. I even had to release myself once when a Trout (I was releasing) shook its head and hooked me. Good thing I smash down the hook barbs on my top water lures with needle nose pliers. It only hurt a little bit when I removed the hook from my hand. Now I know how the fish feel.

If you want to try fishing with top water lures, remember to; go when the wind is light, bring bug spray and smash down the hook barbs on your lures (you will eventually get hooked). Give it a try. I think you will like it.
