VCO players and fans score with social media

Tennis and social media is a love match made in cyber heaven. Social media savvy tennis stars appeal to fans of all ages, making players some of the most prominent social media influencers in sports. From beginners to seasoned players, tennis fans can find almost anything about their favorite players. Everything from getting tips on fixing their form to finding out how their favorite players spend their free time is just a click away.

Social media accounts showcase players and build awareness of the sport. The platform also gives fans an intimate glimpse into the players’ lives.

Fans were able to check out former Daniel Island resident Shelby Rogers’ social media accounts to see what she’s been up to after being sidelined by a knee injury last year. Rogers received a wild card into the main draw of the Volvo Car Open and it will be the first time the 26-year-old will compete since her injury.

Many followers tagged along on her rehab journey. High school sophomore Shianna Guo can relate to Rogers’ recent injury.

“I have knee problems too,” she said. “When I look at her account I see all of these inspiring and encouraging quotes on how not to give up and keep pushing through. It really lifts me up!”

Many tennis stars use social media to showcase products. Daniel Island resident and avid tennis player Kim Riley started following Danielle Collins after watching the newcomer play at the Fed Cup.

“We started checking her out a little more and I found out she has a jewelry line that’s really unique…it’s something I can get that not many people around here would have,” said Riley. “It’s always fun to get something that’s new.”

Last year’s Volvo Car Open champion Kiki Bertens spreads her upbeat message via social media and shares her triumphs with fans. Bertens’ Instagram page gives her almost 51,000 followers a peek at her personal life. Elle Bredemann, a Daniel Island resident and high school sophomore, is inspired by Bertens’ winning determination.

“I see all these photos of her training and putting in the work,” noted Bredemann. “And then to see her win the tournament last year, it just shows how much hard work pays off.”

Corinne Updegrave, a 4.0 tennis player from Daniel Island, is excited to see Caroline Wozniacki in person at the VCO. Updegrave is one of Wozniacki’s 1.3 million followers on Instagram.

“I love that she’s engaged to a very committed man,” said Updegrave. “It’s great to see them travel throughout the world for tournaments and pleasure. I love to see her clothing, like Adidas by Stella McCartney. She always looks fantastic.”

Between Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter the highly successful social influencer has close to 6 million followers and often gives them a peek into her everyday life. A recent tweet about getting locked out of her phone for incorrectly entering the wrong PIN three times, prompted one of her followers to tweet back “Tennis players, they’re just like us.”
