Wake Up Carolina and others target substance abuse

Members of Wake Up Carolina, a community-led initiative aimed at targeting substance abuse among teens, have been busy reaching out to students across the region about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Their latest stop – Philip Simmons Elementary School. Leading the discussion at PSES on March 16 was Wake Up Carolina Advisor Jason Sandoval, Charleston DEA Resident Agent in Charge.

Also last week, a group of local mental health professionals gathered on Daniel Island to continue the conversation about how to best serve those impacted by substance use disorders. Tackling the topic at a special program at the Daniel Island Club on March 14 were Carol Rose from Red Oak Recovery in Asheville, a facility that treats young adults, ages 18-30 who suffer from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders; Rick Barney, clinical social worker and founder of Wilmington, North Carolina-based Momentum Recovery, a program that provides half-way houses for young men suffering from addiction and maladaptive disorders; Daniel Island residents Claire and Chip Law, whose firm Educational Avenues evaluates teens-at-risk and matches them to specific wilderness and therapeutic schools and programs; Juvenile Drug Court Counselor Diane Langston, MED, LPC; and Charleston-based private practice counselors Myra Gasser, LPC, and Ward Lassoe, LPC.
