What's happening at the Daniel Island Library in August?

ECLIPSE EVENTS!
On Aug. 21, there will be a total eclipse of the sun and Charleston is in the path of totality -making it one of the best places to observe!
Join Professor Laura Penny of the College of Charleston Physics & Astronomy department on Monday, Aug. 14, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for a presentation on the upcoming eclipse. The program will feature a special telescope to get an actual live look at the sun.
On Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Astronomy Professor Misty Brown will talk about the history of solar eclipses, how they happen and why one will soon happen here. She will also advise participants on how to view the eclipse safely and where best to witness it.
An Eclipse Viewing Party will be held at the library on Monday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. Glasses for safely viewing the eclipse will be available on a first come, first served basis. The eclipse will also be streamed live for those who do not wish to be outside. Pick up an eclipse treat, too!

MASTER GARDENER Q&A
Monday, Aug. 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. Trained and Certified Clemson Extension Tri-County Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about lawns, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, vegetables, and all aspects of gardening in the Lowcountry. They will also accept soil samples (the cost is $6.00 per sample) and provide handouts and reference materials as needed.

TAI CHI
Tuesdays and Fridays, from 9 to 10 a.m. An ancient form of exercise for all ages using slow, smooth body movements. Tai Chi is particularly effective in healing, strengthening the cardiovascular and immune systems, and disease prevention. It can boost energy, balance, sharpen reflexes and one’s overall sense of well-being.

DI NEEDLEWORKERS
Second and fourth Tuesday of the month (Aug. 8 and Aug. 22), from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. From experts to beginners, join in the fun! Bring your quilt, appliqué, embroidery, or any portable needle project and stay for a while to sew, make new friends and chat.

DI BOOKCLUB
Every third Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Be part of a lively discussion about some popular and chat worthy books. Was it a thumbs up or thumbs down? Come share your thoughts.
Aug. 15 - “Hidden Figures” by Margot Lee Shetterly

RECORDER CLASS
Tuesdays (Aug. 8-29) from 2 to 3 p.m. For beginning or “rusty” adults and teens who want to learn to play in a group setting. Prior recorder or other musical experience not required. Reading music is also not a prerequisite. You should be able to play several pieces within a few weeks.

PHILOSOPHY CLASS
Wednesdays, Aug. 2-30, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Join Prof. Hillyer Rudisill for a free college-level course. Participants can attend at any time since each session stands on its own.

WRITERS’ GROUP
Wednesday, Aug. 2, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Join local author, Crystal Klimavicz, at the Daniel Island Library to connect and share with other local authors and aspiring writers. All are welcome.

BRIDGE GROUP
Fridays, Aug. 11 and 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. Do you play bridge or used to play? Want to play twice a month with no commitment? No Problem! Come to the DI Social Bridge Group (DISBG).
