What's Your Favorite App?

Readers share their favorite app

Bugs Bunny asked “What’s Up, Doc”? But these days a more appropriate question might be “What’s App, Doc?” Yes, that’s right, there are many apps that actually take the place of a face to face office visit with your doctor – HealthTap, Talkspace, Dermcheck and Maven are just a few.

In a recent reader survey, we asked our readers to share their favorite apps. No one suggested a doctor app. It turns out that our readers use weather, travel and other utility apps most frequently. Below find a few of our readers’ favorite apps.

WAZE From reader Chad Vail

WAZE has terrific map info and directions, factoring traffic conditions including "leave by" time reminders based on your schedule. Also, it alerts you to location of road hazards and police activity. It fully integrates via Bluetooth with car audio system.

Carpool Kids From reader Jennifer Johnston

Carpool Kids is little-known and very cool! It makes setting up, maintaining, and checking carpool for particular events super easy. You enter in the drivers, the riders, and the dates, then the drivers sign up for various "legs" of the carpool. When changes are made, drivers receive email alerts.

Shutterfly, CamScanner, & KeyRing From an anonymous reader

This reader likes Shutterfly “because I can back all of my photos up and then order prints and personalized gifts, etc. Another useful app is CamScanner. It allows you to scan and send anything as a PDF and it’s free. My KeyRing app frees up my actual key ring from all those little plastic scan cards.”

Dark Sky From reader Doug French

I am a collector of awesome apps, so picking one is hard. I guess I rely the most on Dark Sky. Dark Sky provides a rainfall prediction over the next 60 minutes based on your precise GPS location. Perfect for boaters and golfers and extremely accurate. It also boasts one of the most beautiful radar screens available and can zoom from your street level all the way out to planet level.

WeatherBug From reader Katherine Chaddock

WeatherBug provides easy to read information about weather anywhere, with satellite and tracker displays if wanted. Very clear, easy to access.

Tide Charts Near Me by 7th Gear From reader Chris McGarty

This is my favorite tides app because I wrote it and it gives me tide forecast, weather forecast, moon forecast, and live radar all in one app. It helps me plan trips to the beach and out on the boat.

DI Trails From an anonymous reader

It helps me navigate the trails around the island. Shazam From an anonymous reader This app allows me to know a song title and artist when I can't remember it.

NEW APPS WANTED: Attention app developers. Here’s an inside track to what some people want developed into apps. We asked, “What kind of app would you like to see developed?” and our readers responded:

• “One that rewinds the weekend and/or fast forwards the week days! :)”

• “I'm not sure there's a process out there anywhere that hasn't been somehow addressed in an app.”

• “An app of good, reliable customer service phone and email chat contacts for every product and service out there - only contacts that get you to REAL people/no phone tree contacts.”

• “More apps that unlock the power of augmented reality.”
