Winter chill can bring fishing thrills

The Daniel Island Kids Fishing Tournament is fast approaching. With this in mind, in my upcoming class at the Daniel Island Library on “How to Catch Fish On and Around Daniel,” I will be covering where and how to catch fish in the Smythe Park lake - the site of the tournament. If you have children and are thinking about participating in the Kids Tournament, please plan to attend the class. Additionally, we will cover fishing in the rivers and creeks that surround Daniel Island. More specifically, how to identify fish holding locations and techniques for catching more fish. The free class will be held on Saturday, April 1 at 10 a.m. I am asking attendees to consider a contribution to the Lucy Boyle Memorial Fund. If you would like to take part, please confirm your seat(s) with a message to captgregp@gmail.com. Seating is limited and the class is filling up fast. Please confirm your seats as soon as possible.

Winter returned to the Lowcountry this week. Cold temperatures, high winds and light rain will make for uncomfortable fishing conditions. However, for anglers willing to endure the elements, fishing is quite good. While the air is cold, the water temperature is 62 degrees. So a few days of winter-like weather will not impact the fish. Last Sunday, the weather was completely miserable but the fish were very cooperative. I expect this trend to continue throughout the week. Do not let chilly air deter you. The fish are biting and more than likely you will have them all to yourself.
