Daniel Island Elementary School principal named
A veteran educator and current Berkeley County principal has been named principal of the new Daniel Island School. Carolyn Morris, a 30-year educator and the current principal of Sangaree Intermediate in Goose Creek, will be the first principal to welcome students when the doors of the K-8 school open in August. She will assume active leadership in January in preparation for the opening. Berkeley Superintendent Chester Floyd introduced Morris as the Daniel Island School principal at a Tuesday morning meeting of school and district administrators. "Carolyn is a proven leader with boundless energy and enthusiasm," said Floyd. "I’m confident she will do a great job." Morris has 15 years of administrative experience at both the elementary and middle school levels: 10 as an assistant principal; 5 as a principal in Florida and South Carolina. Her teaching experience also spans both levels. Sangaree Intermediate has been recognized by the SC Department of Education as a Red Carpet School and a Palmetto Silver Award recipient since Morris became principal in 2000. The school has also earned a Distinguished Arts Program Grant and an Arts in Basic Curriculum Grant under her leadership. Morris and her husband Urquit live on James Island. They have a grown daughter with a career in the film industry in Los Angeles. "I am extremely excited about being the principal who will open the Daniel Island School," said Morris. " My commitment to the students, their parents, and the Daniel Island community is to provide the leadership for a strong academic program with opportunities for students to pursue individual talents and interests. I look forward to building lasting partnerships with the parent and business community to make certain the beacon of our lighthouse school burns brightly."
