TEN YEARS AGO
In the April 6, 2006 issue, the top news story was that a main water line break in Hanahan left the island and the greater Charleston area without water. The Charleston Fire Dept. on the island brought in a reserve engine from Station 20 and two reserve tanker trucks, one from the Macedonia station and the other from Moncks Corner. There were no reported fires in the city during the water shutoff, but islanders raced to Publix to secure safe drinking water, resulting in empty shelves at the store. In other news, then Governor Mark Sanford submitted an Op-Ed to the paper, writing in part: “It boils down to this. Do we develop the 1300 acre tip of Daniel Island in the same fashion other land across the Lowcountry is being developed - or do we do something bold and different and unique since this is land without the normal month-to-month cash flow constraints common to lands owned by developers across the coast? Because you and I own this land, do we look to capture long-term value in addition to short-term return?” Sanford continued, “We have the opportunity now to create our own Central Park of tomorrow – one with scale - and make it even bet¬ter by putting it on the water as Sydney Harbor National Park is on the water in the middle of Sydney, Australia.”

In the April 7, 2011 issue of The Daniel Island News the top news story was that police were investigating a strange letter received by an eight year-old girl in Daniel Island Park addressed with child’s writing but containing a typed note saying they heard about the young girl’s “wonderful, amazing talents” and asking the girl to contact them at a precise time at a cell phone number listed. In business news, the Daniel Island Business Association elected new officers: Dick Laine, President; Clyde Hiers, Vice President; Kim Fulp, Treasurer; Rebecca White, Secretary; Bob Moran, Membership Committee Chair; Amy Gege, Social Committee Chair; Tammy Haight, Restaurant/Retail; Committee Co-Chair, Thomas Dowling, Restaurant/Retail Committee Co-Chair; Holly White, Marketing Committee Chair; and Cheryl Fletcher, Past President.
