ECCO serves the surrounding Daniel Island community

What a couple of months it has been! On September 26, ECCO celebrated the opening of our new satellite program at the Baldwin-Carson Community Outreach Center (BCCOC) in Huger. The very next week, South Carolina was waist deep in water. A week after the flood, we began our month-long turkey distribution service to provide Thanksgiving dinner to more than 500 families. We are currently in the middle of our “Adopt a Family” Christmas effort supplying 100 families with Christmas gifts for their children.

Our services at BCCOC in Huger involve classes teaching computer, job seeking, and healthy cooking skills. The medical clinic is comprised of nurse practitioners and staff to provide prescription assistance. Huger is located halfway between Mt. Pleasant and Moncks Corner, which is twenty miles each way. The number of residents totals around 5,000.

After the historic flooding, ECCO was fortunate to receive a generous outpour of donations and support from all over the country. Because of this we were able to provide flood victims with bedding, personal hygiene kits, cleaning supplies, food, clothing, water, and more. Staff and volunteers helped deliver thousands of items to rural locations in Huger, Awendaw, and McClellanville as well, providing easier access to relief for those who needed help the most.

Over the last several weeks, we have been offering emergency relief funds to our neighbors needing assistance as they navigate through the long disaster recovery process. We set up collaborative agreements with Trident United Way, Seacoast Church and Salvation Army to combine our financial relief assistance to disperse them collectively to restore, repair and replace possessions destroyed in the flood.

So far we have provided at least 20 individuals with direct financial assistance, totaling a little more than $60,000 for home restoration and repair, and property replacement. We are thankful to all of the businesses, civic groups, schools, individuals, and many other groups for giving their time and monetary donations to assist the victims of the flood.

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, we look forward to closing out this year in an incredible way. We are partnering with ‘Operation Fir’ to place and decorate at least 60 trees in the homes of those we serve. The eyes’ of children, who would normally receive little if anything for Christmas, will light up when they see Christmas gifts under the tree! Laughter and squeals of joy and excitement will fill their homes as they open their packages!

The East Cooper continues to amaze me because it is so unbelievably caring and generous! We remain grateful to all who have donated and those whose prayers have lifted up our staff during this season. May the Lord bless you and yours as you celebrate this holiday season!
