Pumpkins and Political Signs
Two things go hand and glove this time of year: smashed pumpkins and stolen political signs.
Both involve the disrespect of personal property and both are criminal.
Over this past stormy weekend, both crimes were evident on Daniel Island. The smashing of pumpkins, while frustrating and destructive of personal property, is often viewed as a prank or a Halloween trick. The stealing and/or destruction of political signs, on the other hand, strike at two important democratic rights: freedom of speech and the right to vote.
Bottom line: Don’t smash pumpkins and don’t steal political signs.
