Island Relief Efforts for Victims of Hurricane Katrina Extended

The Daniel Island Property Owners Association, the Daniel Island Community Fund and Providence Baptist Church are urging Daniel Island residents and businesses to support an island-wide relief effort. Providence Baptist Church (294 Seven Farms Drive) and the Daniel Island Property Owners Association office (130 River Landing Drive, Suite 1C) will be receiving centers (Monday - Friday) for funds and other items donated to help with the relief effort.

All monetary donations (checks) should be made payable to Providence Baptist Church. Please be sure to earmark/put in the memo section of your check (for Hurricane Katrina Relief). All funds will be sent to purchase the necessary items-water, food, diapers, infant formula, clothing, cleaning supplies, etc. Donated funds are tax-deductible. The deadline for donations is Friday, Sept. 9. If you have any questions, please contact David Woody at Providence Baptist Church at 971-5275 or Barbara McLaughlin at Daniel Island POA at 971-9200.

Schools

Call your local schools to see how you can help. Many local schools are raising school supplies and other supplies for displaced students and families.

State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum said last week that South Carolina schools will welcome students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

“We don’t know how many of these students will come here,” Tenenbaum said, “but we want them to know that they will be warmly received, and that we’ll make their transition for entering school as simple as possible.”

Tenenbaum said a number of South Carolina school districts have already enrolled children affected by the storm, but no statewide totals were available today.

Clothing Collection

Last year, island residents helped keep hundreds of area residents warm through generous contributions to a Coat and Sweater Drive. This year, the island has decided to focus its efforts on the thousands of residents of Mississippi and Louisiana who have lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. Bishop England high school senior Alex LaCoste will once again be coordinating this effort on Daniel Island. Alex will be collecting unneeded or outgrown coats, sweaters, jackets for both adults and children. This year she would also like to collect gently used stuffed animals for the children who are victims of this disaster. There will be a collection box for these items at the POA office, M-F, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Alex will also be offering home pick up service for people who have items to donate. For questions or pickup, call Alex LaCoste at 906-6626 or 216-6035. You can also contact Alex via e-mail to schedule a pickup at lacoste@bellsouth.net.

Trident United Way Provides Disaster Relief - Seeks to House Refuges in the Lowcountry

Trident United Way is mobilizing our community’s response both to the crisis in the Gulf Coast and the strain of desperate families arriving in the Lowcountry seeking food, clothing, shelter and emotional support.

Anyone who wants to support relief efforts may visit www.tuw.org to the agencies that need your help.

Families from the Gulf Coast have taken refuge in the Lowcountry, in some cases with virtually nothing but some clothes and toiletries. The Red Cross has been able to use some of its support from United Way to aid those families and prepare for more.
