The DI community helps bring healing after a devastating loss

Six months ago I was talking to my husband, Chuck Dennis, planning our date night and he said he would be home in 30 minutes. God had other plans for him. He never made it home that night and instead went to heaven.

The Lord blessed me with an incredible husband and father to our four sons. We had just been to Italy to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We never know how much our life can change in an instant. I don’t know what I have done with myself in the past six months. I have been lost in a puddle of tears. I must remember God is not finished writing our story and to prosper so I can pay it forward to all of you who have been so good to our family.

I’m writing this to say thank you to those who have looked after our family, particularly the Daniel Island Dads group, which Chuck had been a member of. Our community is very special. It takes a community working together to raise families. We all have struggles in our own ways at times. When we work together and support one another it makes this job easier. My husband had a soft place in his heart for kids without fathers who were active in their lives.

There is a saying that we don’t know what others go through until we walk in their shoes. Now that I don’t have my love here, I have so much more gratitude for husbands. I want to take this moment to ask each of you to show appreciation for your amazing husband and make time for date night as you never know when it will be your last time together. We had so much fun in Italy and looked forward to another 25 years together. We had more dates to go on, plans to dance at our four sons’ weddings, and looked forward to being grandparents together.

I told our sons if you are half the gentlemen your dad is you will be blessed beyond measure. These blessings from heaven that continue to pour down upon us are coming back to us from all the good things my husband did, not just for our family but for our community as well.

They say you are known by the company you keep. Let people know that the company here on Daniel Island is full of a community of strong marriages, good families, and people who are looking after one another and making a difference in each other’s lives. My husband loved helping others and making a difference.

We loved walking together on the path along the water. I will be placing a bench in honor of him and the many dads in this community that lead by their great examples as fathers, in their hard work for our families and community, loyalty to their word, and promises to God. The bench will be a reminder to us all that time is precious. Sit for a moment and truly show your love to those who walk with you on the path of life. Sit with them on a bench and listen, laugh together, and make memories. Children today need us to sit with them more than ever. When you have struggles, know there are others here to support you and how blessed we are to be a part of this beautiful community. I could fill the entire newspaper with names of those I want to give special thanks to so forgive me if you don’t see your name here, but know our intent in writing this is to show our gratitude to each of you who have graciously looked after our family during this time.

A special thank you to Daniel Island Dads, Saint Clare of Assisi, Women of Joy, Stella Marris, Saint Vincent de Paul, USA Soccer, The Juice Plus Company, Drawing Near to God, Wisp, Gramling Brothers Real Estate, Karen Sadik-Kahn, and every one of you who sent a card, text, phone call, flowers, dinners, and prayers. You must know that your thoughtfulness lifted us up like angels’ wings.

In honor of my husband there will be an annual Chuck Dennis memorial soccer tournament. Save the date on July 27th to be a part of this special event (for details, call 512-966-2299).

As many of you know, Chuck spent a lot of time guiding his sons on the path to play professional soccer. Alexander is home from Denmark and will be playing for Wofford in the fall. Thaddeus has continued to play in Denmark this season. Charlie is playing golf and soccer at Oceanside and Mattie and I will finish our last year homeschooling together. He continues playing with his amazing soccer team at USA.

Blessings to you all.

Theresa Dennis
