DANIEL ISLAND PARK CONCERNS AND CITY REPRESENTATION

It is time for Daniel Island Park to have its own voice with the City of Charleston, Berkley County and Daniel Island Company. While Daniel Island Neighborhood Association states it represents all of DI south and north of 526, it has really only represented the area south of 526. There are only a few Park residents that belong to DINA. This was because there were no Park issues that needed attention but that is changing rapidly with the tremendous growth of homes and apartments.

Traffic congestion, excessive traffic, single routes into and out of Daniel Island Park, safety, zoning issues, ownership transition, 526 noise, City of Charleston representation quality of life issues, property value retention are all concerns.

What will it take to create a responsive Park Association? Daniel Island Park population is large enough to qualify for the Charleston Neighborhood Council. This organization hosts regular meetings with the Mayor and his staff to share information, report concerns and make suggestions to improve quality of life for residents. This would be an important forum to voice concerns and issues.

Several actions must be completed and an application submitted for approval by this fall. These actions will take some time and it would be imperative to start moving toward a Park Association now.

If enough residents share interest, an initial meeting will be set up. Please indicate your interest to Al Hansen. (aghansen1991@bellsouth.net)

SOLITUDE

I wish to commend Mr. Steve Ferber on his article in the May 26 edition “Why are we so afraid of solitude?” Since I live alone and know many wonderful people who do, it was uplifting to have someone give credibility to people who enjoy their solitude. Sometimes it is difficult, especially during holidays, but overall it can give a sense of true freedom and peace.

Thank you,

Susan Rains
