Memorial Day invite to all – Celebration planned near Pirate Park

Dear Daniel Island Community, This is my Dad, Alan Moskin. My Dad was drafted at the age of 18 years old to fight in World War II. He never spoke about his experiences overseas at all while I was growing up. He was a quiet, sensitive, albeit quirky man. He actually downplayed it. A sealed box downstairs in our basement contained a variety of war “paraphernalia”- everything from photos he had taken to a Nazi’s sword and gun. My sister and I opened that box on occasion unbeknownst to him, but neither of us ever fully understood the gravity of what he had experienced. He never spoke about it; we never inquired. He was a concentration camp liberator. My Dad is 89 years old now and has seven grandchildren. Six of them are boys; two of them are approaching the age at which he was drafted, which is almost unfathomable to my sister and me.

Over the past several years, my Dad’s mission in life has been to speak to the “younger generation” about what he witnessed during WWII because, quite frankly, there are not many alive to tell the story. He travels all over the country to speak to young adults in an effort to educate and to prevent something as atrocious as this to ever happen again, and to honor his fellow fallen comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Dad is coming to Charleston late next week to celebrate his 90th birthday on, of all days, Memorial Day, May 30. I would like to welcome any and all of you, military or not, to come to the picnic area adjacent to the Pirate Park near our home on Pierce Street at 3 p.m. on the 30th of May to raise the flag and sing the National Anthem… and maybe a little Happy Birthday to my Dad, Alan R. Moskin, on his 90th Birthday. I want this to be a surprise for him and I know how meaningful this will be to him and our entire extended family. Feel free to share with anyone who you think might want to be there (and also please walk or ride bikes where possible to cut down on traffic and parking). We probably won’t have enough cake for everyone, but I promise, there will be a lot of love, laughter, and tears.

Thanks,

Lisa Moskin Tonon

Don’t sit or stand on the lane lines

This is written to supplement the notices in the Daniel Island Newsletter regarding the pool rules, specifically people sitting or standing on the lane line. Today (this past Sunday) I found the second lane line broken in a week. Upon returning home I searched prices on a replacement and the lowest I could find was $350.

That is $700 in one week of needless expense of homeowners’ dues. Counting last summer (I saw at least 5 more broken last summer) and we are near $2,500. The cables on the lane lines can take more straight line tension than any of us can give them. However, when people sit or stand on them the side shear breaks the strands of the cable and eventually the lane line breaks. Please do not sit or stand on the lane lines. Also please intervene if someone else is doing it. Thank you.
