Letter to the Editor - October 17, 2019

Dear Editor:

Every first and third Friday of the month, at noon, a group of Toastmasters heads over to Summit Place Assisted Living to continue their personal journey toward improving their communication and leadership skills. Summit Place staff and residents have welcomed Toastmasters since 2005.

I joined the Daniel Island Toastmasters Club over ten years ago, and I’ve enjoyed the meetings more than I can say. It’s such a great way to enjoy my day! I learn to practice real-world skills, and I feel like I’ve expressed myself or helped other members find their voice and transform themselves.

You might think: I could read a book and practice on my own. However, our club is like a lab, where you get to voice your thoughts and opinions by giving reasons and examples from your life or from research. Then you tie it up neatly in a conclusion, and then you are evaluated for how well you developed your topic, how you modulated your voice during the important moments, how your body language spoke, and so on.

Whether you are a working professional, stay-at-home parent, or retiree, this is a most efficient, economical and enjoyable way to gain real-world, professional competencies. The new Pathways manual is accessible online so you can prepare for your meetings at any time, from any location. The real benefit however, is practicing your speaking and leadership skills during and after the meetings, living in the moment, and getting better at understanding how you communicate.

If you can join us from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on the first and third Friday of each month, then our club is the right one for you!
