Park Day House Raffle Benefits Habitat for Humanity

Money raised from the popular playhome raffle at this year’s Daniel Island Park Day goes to East Cooper Habitat for Humanity (ECHH). The donation will be used to further local affordable housing projects, according to ECHH Executive Director David Barnard.

"We are excited to be the recipients of the raffle proceeds from the playhouse project," he said. "The four houses that have been donated are great symbols of the builders and the community and they highlight the desire of the Daniel Island community to support affordable housing."

Habitat for Humanity builds affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter. The houses are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage, and homeowners and volunteers build the houses under trained supervision. Homeowner families are chosen according to their need, their ability to repay the mortgage and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat.

East Cooper Habitat for Humanity is hoping to build homes adjacent to Daniel Island in the future, according to Barnard.

"We are still searching for that piece of land that will allow us to build in the Cainhoy area," he said. "We have lots of people working and a couple of leads on families who own land and have the potential to become Habitat homeowners."

Meanwhile, ECHH has been active with projects in Mount Pleasant.

"We are finishing the last of 14 homes on Eagle Street, Hope Row in the Greenhill Community," Barnard said. "We have just dedicated a home we finished there in honor of Catherine Carroll of Carroll Realty, which has provided funding over the years to pay for at least two homes. They are great friends of East Cooper Habitat for Humanity."

Park Day not only provides financial benefits, it is an opportunity to spread the word about ECHH, according to Barnard.

"Park Day gives us the opportunity to share with the community of Daniel Island and to benefit in many ways," he said. "We get the financial gift from the raffle and the opportunity to meet with everyone and share our mission. Hopefully, we will gain volunteers and partners to work with us in the future."

Playhome raffle tickets are available through the East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, the Daniel Island Real Estate Sales Office, students at Bishop England, and will also be on sale during Park Day on Oct. 22.

A custom doghouse built by Hidden Oaks Properties will also be raffled on Park Day. John Ancrum Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Doc Williams SPCA will evenly split proceeds. Tickets are available through these organizations and will also be available for sale at Park Day.
